Have you ever thought to yourself I really miss Mystery Science Theater 3000? Well why arent you watching rifftrax? Its the same people doing newer movies, you can download the MP3’s from the site ans sync it up yourself or maybe just snag it pre-synced and balanced over the movie from the pirate bay and donate via the paypal thing.

To those of you that have played eve, have you ever seen this picture and thought “I wonder which titan will die due to lag?”

To other MMO players this may seem like a strange problem. Most other MMO’s are sharded and have different “realms” and servers with several thousand players on one server. Eve is unsharded so every player is in the same universe. This allows fights involving several hundred even thousands of players to happen regularly.

As awesome as that may sound it can cause problems. Most of these large fights are over strategic assets in a scheduled battle which allows CCP to “reinforce a node” in preparation of the battle. Even then rendering 1500 individual ships and the included effects like drones, missiles, and shields can make any server poop the bed.

Well CCP thinks that this may not be an issue soon, they are going to be introducing time dilation.

If you can’t watch the video, one of the problems with these lag-fests is that the server will lose commands from players, such as “shoot that guy” or “oh god I’m dying warp out warp out” basically making the battle favor whoever gets lucky and doesn’t get ignored by the server. Time dilation will slow down everything in-game so that the server will receive all the commands.

So it will still be slow but,this time you wont just randomly die or get get disconnected and sign back on to see yourself back in station without a ship.

So apparently the map released for the Beta was not the one the players wanted. Ok well that’s a little disappointing but it comes out next month so you would think they would just enjoy it. No. This is the internet.

A threadnaught was started on the EA forums in response to not getting their way for the Beta. Kotaku was Kind enough to link a cache of the boards. The posts were of a quality you would expect from an FPS community. Granted not everyone was complaining but, the ones that did were loud and the message was coarse.

The developer/mod response was quick and had a bit of edge to it:

I think that the Mod response was more than fair. After reading some of the posts I am actually surprised there were not more bans being handed out.

This isn’t the only place this happens. Take a look at your favorite game’s forum, I am sure there are several threads about how someone doesn’t like a feature so the developers must be huffing glue.

Now there are many times when criticism is warranted or in BF3’s case asked for. The problem is it’s rarely constructive. Asking the dev if his parents were related will not help fix a matchmaking system.

Basically what my point is, is that as a community we need to lower the level of mouth breathing we do. When devs give us something cool like the opportunity to play a highly anticipated title early and give some input to help improve the game for everyone else…. Maybe just be a decent person, enjoy the game, and give some constructive criticism.
